Audiobooks are also sometimes called talking books. They are very popular now, particularly with the advent of companies like Audible. Many people like to multi-task now. They exercise, commute, do the gardening or housework and cook while listening to Audiobooks. They even fall asleep to the sound of the spoken word at night-time.

The word Audiobook refers to a book being read out loud often by an actor which is then taped. There are two main types of talking book, either abridged, where the text is edited down to a shorter version or unabridged, where the whole book is on the Audiobook.

Audiobooks have been around in different forms for nearly a century and have proved immensely popular with schools and public libraries, and they remain so.

About forty years ago hardback and paperback publishers began to realise that there was a growing market for the Audiobook and they began to sell these more widely.

Two years ago nearly 50,000 audio-books were recorded in the United States of America. The growth in that time was 20 per cent higher over the previous.

The Passenger by Ulrich Alexander Boschwitz has just been released.

A long lost novel written in 1938 about Nazi Germany and the treatment of Jews has become a best-seller. The Passenger by Ulrich Alexander Boschwitz is a must read for those wishing to appreciate the horrors through a contemporary viewpoint.


The novel follows the journey of Otto Silbermann who must flee with his family from the Nazis following the increasing violence surrounding Kristallnacht.


The book, The Passenger charts his hurried escape taking train after train criss-crossing Germany in order to find a border he can cross to freedom.


This classic novel by Boschwitz gives a great sense of the tremendous fear of discovery which so many of those people suffered and the consequences that would follow if the Nazis discovered them.

Peter James is ban award winning detective thriler writer. His Roy Grace detective books are completely addictive and atmospheric.. While a Brighton gangster is being tried for conspiracy to murder there is a person in the courtroom who is watching the jurors carefully. The thugs compatriots are wondering which two jurors they will try to influence to throw the verdict. Roy Grace begins to investigate a murder which soon appears to have links to the gangsters trial, The stakes are high and danger is ever present. The cat and mouse plot is a real page turner.

Peter James is a top-notch thriller writer and is well worth a read.

Netflix Originals – What is next?

Will See Glass, by the writer Ido Graf, be the next blockbuster film or Netflix Original for the coming year of 2021?

The movie and television industry has reinvigorated itself over the last few years with great films and diverse series coming out of Hollywood and Netflix Originals. It has been the saving of many of us during the pandemic. The great Hollywood studios such as Universal Pictures, MGM, Paramount Pictures, Walt Disney Pictures, Columbia Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures have been a life saver.

Who among us has not sat glued to the TV unable to pull ourselves away as we wait for a new Hollywood blockbuster release or the next instalment of a Netflix Original series …I have felt as if I am an addict – unable to drag myself from the screen even to pour another glass of wine. I cannot help it – some of these series are just so professionally written and engaging that I feel lost without them.

When I get though every episode of a series, I am often suffering withdrawal. Sometimes it even starts before I finish watching every episode which is available! I look down the diminishing list of episodes that I have left and feel a gut-wrenching sense of loss – what will I possibly do when the series is complete?

I begin to question myself! Could Netflix be playing a joke on their viewers – Surely, I don’t have to wait a month until the next series is released?   Have I misread the list of episodes? Maybe there are more that I didn’t notice? Yes that’s it!

I knew that I should have stopped at the last bottle of wine – my vision is going! It’s all been a horrible hallucination! Yes, it’s true – there is another series and more episodes available! Have I got time to run to the kitchen to grab another bottle of wine and some crisps before it starts – Oh and a saucepan too so I can go to the toilet while I’m sat on the sofa?

I make a dash for it!

But no, it’s not true! There is not another series yet! What a nightmare! So I start watching it again to stave off depression while I wait for the next series to be released.

I know! I think to myself – I will watch the whole series again on the TV from the start with my right eye which will help me to keep a grip. Then I can hold up my phone and scan with my left eye to search for another new series to get hooked on.

Then I realise that with two hands in use I cannot use my saucepan or drink my wine. Fortunately, these problems are less insurmountable than my issues with SLL, ‘Series Love Loss’.

I lean forward without taking either eye from the screens and grasp the lip of the bottle with my teeth. I slowly tilt my head back while keeping my balance and without either eye losing contact with the screens. Then a heartfelt memory of one of the greatest Hollywood films comes to mind – Apollo 13. My lips form a manic grin as I compare myself to those astronauts – they thought they were attempting the impossible with little measure for error! If they could see me now, then they would realise that they had it easy!

I am beginning to sweat now as things are becoming critical! I just must GO PEE! This is an absolute crisis! Unperturbed and unrelenting as the right eye is seeing a clever pot twist and the left eye has found something interesting – I shift my weight on the sofa and use the toes of both feet to grip the saucepan to pull it towards me – a task made more difficult from slippery food residue on the outside from a week ago when I last ate something.

Then things enter a critical stage – I am beginning to break down – the pressure is too great. Something must give!

Then just in the nick of time when the plot twist in my right eye is at its pinnacle – my body gives up. I cannot hold back the floodgates anymore. The sofa is soaking wet, but at least it is warm – I drop the saucepan and life just keeps on giving. I am reminded of Apollo 13 again – they went in their underwear – I am sure I read that somewhere years ago!

I will tell my girlfriend that when she gets home – she will understand! Then suddenly my left eye has found a new series with great reviews – it just gets better and better!

My body relaxes and I feel an uplifting rush like none I have ever felt before! Roll on happiness!

Netflix is based in Los Gatos, California and since it started with that iconic series House of Cards, it has not looked back.

The Editor and Publisher of Southwest Florida online wrote a very full review of the conspiracy novel, See Glass and said in his final comment, ‘I would imagine a screenwriter could polish See Glass off and make a very dandy film thriller.’

Will this clever political conspiracy thriller which is available on Amazon be the next Hollywood or Netflix Original hit of this year.

The Fox was published in 2918 by Frederick Forsyth who is a superb author of political conspiracy, crime thrillers.

Plot
The computers of the NSA, the Pentagon and the CIA are hacked by a young British teenager called Luke Jennings.

Jennings is captured in London in an SAS raid and is used by the British Secret Service. The man is used in order to attack Russia, Iran’s nuclear program and also North Korea’s nuclear program.

What follows is a cleverly pertinent plot which is a wonderful book to read.

The Times newspaper said “Forsyth deserves his place among the thriller greats”.

The Washington Post said the book is “a classic thriller thats also eerily relevant”.

Frederick Forsyth is a top author who’s books are available on Amazon and good bookstores.

There are many top fiction thriller and crime writers from Ireland – they are very talented, innovative and have great style.

Here I mention but a few of these new and upcoming authors to entice you.

Top Irish writers include:

Conor Brady is a great writer of historical crime. His work is evocative, enthralling and always well written and engaging. His novel I Hunt In Winter is my personal favorite.

His historical research is faultless and the detail is captivating. As Editor of the Irish Times he has a fine pedigree and you can expect only the best.

The respected Irish Times speaks very highly of Olivia Kieran. Read this writers books and you will see why. I feel that this writer will have a long and successful career as her fan base must surely expand rapidly.

The author Gene Kerrigan writes beautiful prose set in a contemporary Ireland awash with thieves, slippery individuals and a society’s seedy underbelly laid bare. He is the author of The Rage.

Benjamin Black is a Booker Prize winner and a fine writer and his book Wolf on a String is my favourite.

The fiction from writer Ken Bruen is gritty and raw and very readable. It has the feel of classic American crime novels of yesteryear brought into the modern world.

Declan Burke is a prolific writer of crime thrillers. His fiction is well written with great plot and with a wry sense of humour on occasion. The Lost and the Blind is my personal favourite.

The John Connolly books of Charlie Parker are set in the US in Maine. Connolly is a very interesting wiriter who goes from strength t strength and I feel we will hear much more from him in the future.

He has a cocktail of horror and crime which is refreshing to read.

My favourite book from this Dublin born author is, The Woman in the Woods.

The author Sinéad Crowley has rapidly made a name for herself in the crime writing world, and rightly so! A great writer who certainly knows her craft. Her psychological crime thrillers are full of suspense and are well worth the read. My recommended read is Can Anybody Help Me?

There are some superb fiction thriller writers from India – they are very talented and have great style

I was brought up in the sixties and seventies on fiction, mystery and general thrillers set in the Indian sub-continent. At that time they were written by Europeans who had spent much of their lives in India or Pakistan in the military or in commerce. The books were alive with the wonderful vibrancy and colour of that fascinating part of the world. Often local customs and languages were interspersed with the plots adding to the spice mix.

Such an intriguing part of the world gives a glorious backdrop to any novel and none more so than thrillers and crime fiction.

Now wonderfully talented and readable writers who are native to that part of the world are flexing their talents. They write with a freshness and vibrancy, which is utterly engaging.

Here I mention but a few of these upcoming authors to entice you.

Great writers include:

The Dust Will Never Settle is a beautiful book written by Mukul Deva who is at the forefront of the military thriller genre in India.

Deva served in the army for many years, which gives great realism and grittiness to his bestseller books.

His thrillers are peppered with politics and terrorism, and they are very fast-paced.

Ashwin Sanghi was a successful businessman before writing three bestsellers back to back.

The Rozabal Line by Ashwin Sanghi is a fine novel in the Dan Brown style. Working with American author, he wrote Private India.

Dead In A Mumbai Minute by Madhumita Bhattacharya is wonderfully rich in both language and plot. It is a fine example of a thriller from a top novelist.

Juggi Bhasin also writes books in the military thriller genre. He writes with great realism which must come from his years as a journalist covering many military actions in disputed zones like Kashmir.

The Avenger is a brilliantly crafted book which draws on contemporary events to bring it to life.                                    

Another superb novel written by Bhasin is the Terrorist.

Clark Prasad draws on conspiracy theories and found his route to success through self-publishing initially on Amazon.

Paul Thomas is a top novelist. His first crime novel Old School Tie featured the first ever Māori Detective Sergeant, Tito Ihaka.

He won the Australian Ned Kelly Award for Crime Writing for his book, Inside Dope.

Vanda Symon’s novels include Overkill, Ringmaster, Containment, Bound and The Faceless. You would be well advised to read them.

J’adore les écrivains de fiction français – ils sont très innovants et ont beaucoup de style
David Foenkinos a été sélectionné pour le prix Goncourt 2011 pour son dernier livre Les Souvenirs. Son dernier roman La Délicatesse est le best-seller n ° 1 à plus de 700 000 exemplaires. Le thriller a été adapté pour l’écran et met en vedette cette merveilleuse actrice française Audrey Tautou
Guillaume Musso est un bon écrivain et ses livres ont tous eu du succès et ont été faits pour l’écran.
L’un de ses meilleurs romans est L’Appel de l’ange. Récemment, ses livres ont été un savant mélange de crime et de romance et sont aux États-Unis.
Fred Vargas s’est vendu à plus de six millions d’exemplaires depuis 2004. Ancienne archéologue devenue romancière policière, elle est une écrivaine superstar.

Sea Glass - My best fiction books 2020

The book See Glass by Ido Graf, is a fast-paced, action, political thriller which has been described as having a style like Tom Clancy.  I agree with that but I would also say, Frederick Forsyth as both authors researched their novels in great detail,  as does Graf. They all intertwine fact with fiction giving novels of profound insight and realism.

Sea Glass is a contemporary thriller set in various exotic locations such as North America, Europe and the Middle East.

The story begins in a small Andalusian fishing village when a redundant reporter meets a former Foreign Legionnaire by chance. The story he is told appears to be fictitious, but as the journalist begins to dig deeper  …the boundaries between fact and fiction begin to blur and the danger increases.

A top story for men and women that encompasses secrets, spies, hidden Nazi gold and politicians across the northern hemisphere.

The new book See Glass by thriller, adventure, espionage story writer Ido Graf has all the twists of a Nelson DeMille bestseller novel. DeMille’s Plum Island is one of my best fiction books of all time. See Glass is one of my picks for best fiction books of 2020.

Another great fiction book writer I have read recently is Ben MacIntyre. His book The Spy and the Traitor is a riveting book and another of my top fiction books to read. It’s the sort of book that would make a great contemporary film or TV series.

Many new streaming services have appeared in recent years. Film production companies  such as Metro Goldwyn Mayer and Paramount Pictures have been joined by others such as HBO, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Studios, Sky TV, Crackle and Disney+.
