The Altman Code is Robert Ludlum’s fourth book in the immensely popular Covert One series.

A photographer is cruelly killed on the docks in Shanghai, China. His crime? He took photographs of a cargo ship being loaded. The film is destroyed.

The US navy secretly follow a ship mid-ocean – the ship is Chinese, the cargo – believed to be lethal. Aboard are believed to be enormous quantities of chemicals. Chemicals which could be used to create WMD! Weapons of Mass Destruction!

The US President has no intention of seeing these weapons reach rogue elements in the already volatile Middle East.

The situation is immensely delicate.

Mr Mercedes by Stephen King

The Sunday Express said that this novel, Mr Mercedes by Stephen King, was’the best thriller of the year’.

Stephen King has written over fifty worldwide best-selling books. Mr Mercedes was the first novel of his to feature the character, Bill Hodges.

Several of Stephen Kings books have been made into films such The Shawshank Redemption.

King was shortlisted for the CWA Gold Dagger Award for Mr Mercedes and won the prestigious Edgar Award for best novel for it. Mr Mercedes was also awarded the Goodreads Choice Award for the Best Mystery and Thriller of 2014.

Stephen King has also been awarded the National Book Foundation Medal, the National Medal of Arts and the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America.

No doubt, like many police officers Bill Hodges, cannot forget the cases that he couldn’t close. One particularly unpleasant case remains at the forefront of his mind. Early one morning at the opening of a jobs fair, eight people in the line-up of hundreds were killed.

They were killed by a madman who drove a stolen Mercedes into them. The deceased just wanted to improve their lives and the lives of their families on that morning and yet, their lives would cease that fateful day.

The horror of that day and the killer at large haunts Hodges. Then one day the fire is re-ignited in him. He receives a letter from someone claiming to be the killer. He says he will kill again.

Bill Hodges had never liked to see a criminal get away with a crime. He was intent that this killer would not repeat his crime, retirement or no retirement, he was going to get him!

Brady Hartsfield is intent on killing again, taunting Hodges just adds some spice to the event.  This time he is intent on killing many more.

Hodges and his buddies will do everything they can to catch the killer before it is too late.

This is a beautifully crafted novel with three dimensional characters and a fast paced, page turning plot from one of the masters of the craft.

Take the time to read this novel, Mr Mercedes, you will not be disappointed.

James Patterson is a prolific writer having written 147 novels in his career and selling more than 300 million books. Though it may seem almost impossible to believe, he holds the New York Times record for the most number 1 New York Times Best sellers by an author – an incredible 67. A total of 114 of his novels have actually been in the list.

He has sold more novels than Dan Brown, Stephen King and John Grisham – all top authors in their own right.

Patterson was awarded the Literarian Award in 2015 by the National Book Foundation for his philanthropy in relation to books and reading.

James Patterson regularly works with highly respected co-authors such as Ashwin Sanghi, Candice Fox, Maxine Paetro, Andrew Gross, Mark Sullivan, Peter de Jonge and Michael Ledwidge and. He even co-authored with former U.S. President Bill Clinton writing the novel, The President Is Missing.

The 18th Abduction is another in the Women’s Murder Club series.

In San Francisco three schoolteachers disappear, all women. Soon the investigation becomes one of murder.

Detective Lindsay Boxer is under great pressure. Her husband, Joe Molinari, gets involved with a woman who has a startling revelation. She came from Eastern Europe and she says that she saw a high-profile war criminal from there in San Francisco.

The journalist, Cindy Thomas, researches the missing women and their backgrounds with startling discoveries. The woman who spoke to Joe unexpectedly disappears adding to the intrigue.

The threads of the mystery begin to merge and Lindsay, her husband Joe and the Women’s Murder Club combine their efforts to expose the vicious international criminals at the root.

Believable, frightening and very readable.

The Midnight Line by Lee Child

The Midnight Line by Lee Child is another in the Jack Reacher series. I sometimes have to wonder how he comes up with some of his diverse and compelling ideas – but then I think who cares, as long as I get to read them.

Jack Reacher looks into the window of a Mid-western town pawn shop and is surprised to see a West Point class ring. It dates from 2005. So hard to come by, it seems sad and strange that it would be pawned.

Reacher had been to West Point and he couldn’t imagine someone willingly giving something such as this up – if it was willingly.

It belonged to a female cadet who had graduated.

Reacher suspects the ring may have been stolen. Reacher interrogates the pawnbroker who says that the ring was sold to him by Jimmy Rat. He’s a biker who is also a nasty bit of work. Reacher ‘deals with’ the biker’s only to find out that the West Point ring had previously been in the possession of Arthur Scorpio, a fence who also has a laundromat in Rapid City, South Dakota. Reacher knows that Rat will have told Scorpio about him.

Reacher arrives in Rapid City and comes across a detective called, Gloria Nakamura. She has been tracking Scorpio and has tried to build a case against him with little success.

Reacher also meets a private investigator called Terrence Bramall. The PI had been hired by a woman called Tiffany Jane Mackenzie. She was desperate to find her sister, who was, he finds out, the owner of the ring. Her name being, Serena Rose Sanderson.

Reacher tricks Scorpio’s men into abducting him before he show’s them who’s boss! Eventually Arthur Scorpio gives Reacher a name – Seymour Porterfield. Reacher finds that this was the man who gave Scorpio the ring. But Scorpio has sent someone to kill Reacher.

He is consumed with a desire to find the owner of the ring. He tracks her across America to the west and on to a town called Mule Crossing in Wyoming. The plot is a real rollercoaster with crooks, illegal drugs and pharmaceutical companies with little in the way of ethics.

But as always this comes with a price as he tackles dishonest cops, bikers, thugs and a whole host of villains.

The Midnight Line is Lee Child’s twenty-second Jack Reacher book and was released in 2017.

Lee Child is one of the foremost writers of fiction around today and it’s easy to see why.

Reacher tinha estado em West Point e não conseguia imaginar alguém desistindo de boa vontade de algo como isso – se fosse de boa vontade.

Reacher suspeita que o anel pode ter sido roubado. Reacher interroga o penhorista, que diz que o anel foi vendido a ele por Jimmy Rat. Ele é um motociclista que também dá um trabalho desagradável. Whether you like it or not….it’s certainly a MUST READ!

It’s incredible and utterly enthralling and was always sure to give a heavy dose of authenticity to this novel.

Reminiscent of the James Grady novel, Six Days of the Condor and the subsequent film Three Days of the Condor, the action in The President is Missing is also set over three days.

Threatening cyber-attack viruses, a buxom Bosnian assassin, chronic illness, the threat of impeachment are some of the troubles on the recently widowed Presidents mind… and then there is the ‘Sons of Jihad’ to deal with, if that want enough!

The destruction of America as a global super-power, is the end game.

The President is Missing by President Bill Clinton and James Patterson is a true epic and an exciting political thriller and is well worth the read!

The Rooster Bar by John Grisham.

What’s to say about John Grisham – except SUPERB! Some of my favourite books and films.

The Rooster Bar is another winner and is utterly engrossing.

It’s an ingenious novel relating to a group of third year law students Zola, Mark and Todd who spend much of their spare time in The Rooster Bar where Todd serves drinks.

They realise that they have been conned. They went heavily into debt borrowing money to pay for the courses at a poor law school where the graduates rarely pass the final bar exams and then get low grade jobs when they do.

They find out that the law school is one of a group of them owned by a dodgy hedge fund in New York who also specialise in student loans.

Deciding that they want to get their own back, they realise that there may also be a way to make some cash into the bargain.

The Rooster Club is a great novel by a fabulously inventive international writer, John Grisham.

Origin by Dan Brown.

Dan Brown writes another in the Robert Langdon series following on from Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Symbol, and Inferno.

It is a novel full of twists and turns which keeps you guessing. Langdon, the well-known Harvard professor of symbology and religious iconology, is invited to Bilbao in Spain to an event at the Guggenheim Museum. Edmond Kirsch, a former student of Langdon, is to give, what he calls, a major announcement which, ‘will change the face of science forever’ and which will answer two of life’s most enduring questions…’Where did we come from?’ and ‘Where are we going?’

The billionaire is a futurist who puts forth incredible high-tech inventions and who makes spectacular predictions.

The event turns to chaos and Kirsch’s controversial discoveries are at risk of being lost.

Langdon is shocked and is forced to escape Bilbao with Ambra Vidal, the director of the museum who worked with Kirsch to organise the event. In search of a secret password that will unlock Kirsch’s secret, they escape to Barcelona. Two world religious leaders, Jewish Rabbi Yehuda Köves, and Islamic Imam Syed al-Fadl are killed.

Langdon is under constant threat from fanatics and an enemy that will not stop. The Spanish throne is implicated in this race to uncover Kirsch’s incredible discovery.

Dan Brown is a highly inventive writer and Origin is sure to be another major success for this great writer of thriller fiction.

The Quantum Spy by David Ignatius

The Quantum Spy is the most recent offering from David Ignatius.

Ignatius is a novelist and a journalist from the USA.  He studied at Harvard University and King’s College, Cambridge in the UK. He has been given many awards including, the Urbino World Press Award from the Italians, a lifetime achievement award from the International Committee for Foreign Journalism and the Legion of Honour from the French.

David Ignatius is a best-selling author of such works as Body of Lies, The Bank of Fear and The Director. The Quantum Spy is a story of worldwide espionage, betrayal and high-tech.

In a world where technology races ahead exponentially, the threat of a super-fast quantum computer is ever more real.

CIA officer Harris Chang tracks a Chinese informant who may put the American’s top-secret research laboratories at risk.

The development of the quantum computer would put China or America in overall control for decades to come.

Ignatius has written a spellbinding thriller with action racing across the world, from North America and on to Mexico and Singapore.

This is a classy cyber thriller which may well foretell the future for us all. Well worth the read!

The Silk Stocking Murders by Anthony Berkeley

The Silk Stocking Murders by Anthony Berkeley, was first published in 1928 and is one of Berkeley’s earliest novels.

Born, Anthony Berkeley Cox in Watford in 1893 he attended Sherborne School and University College in Oxford. Like many of his contemporaries he served in the Army during World War I. He honed his writing skills working as a journalist for magazines such as Punch and The Humorist among others. In 1930 the Detection Club was founded in London by various popular mystery writers such as Berkeley, Freeman Wills Crofts and the great Agatha Christie.

From the 1940s onwards, he wrote for several of the major newspapers including The Guardian, The Sunday Times and the Manchester Guardian.

Anthony Berkeley Cox wrote under various pseudonyms, including Anthony Berkeley, Francis Iles and A. Monmouth Platts.

His novel, the Layton Court Mystery which was published in 1925 was his first novel. The amateur detective, Roger Sheringham, features here first and appeared in many later novels.

His novel ‘Before the Fact’ hit the silver screen as the 1941 classic film Suspicion. It starred Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine and was directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

The Silk Stocking Murders novel is a masterpiece and unusual for it’s time to involve a serial killer.

Roger Sheringham, though a heavy drinker, was a superb, though flawed, detective. Frequently putting his trust, wrongly, in individuals and making repeated mistakes he had a knack of meandering his way to the truth.

The Silk Stocking Murders sees him trying to solve the disappearance of a vicar’s daughter in London. Sheringham is horrified to find that the young woman is dead. The girl was found hanging, her own silk stocking around her neck. Though her death has the appearance of a suicide, Sheringham knows of other deaths throughout London and he sees a pattern developing. He is convinced that it is the work of a crazed madman.

For it’s time this must have been a quite shocking and horrific tale of a psychotic killer lose on the streets of London. The use of lingerie, Ground-breaking and still enthralling after all of these years, the story of a rather unusually flawed sleuth is well worth the read. The Silk Stocking Murders is published by HarperCollins and is available on Amazon or at good bookstores.

Gorky Park, the fiction novel by Martin Cruz Smith which introduced us all to the delights of the that most enigmatic of Russians, Arkady Renko.

Gorky Park takes its name from the amusement park of the same name in Moscow. Three corpses, their faces and fingertips missing, are found buried in the snows of the park. The body parts had been removed to hide their identities.

Renko, a chief investigator for the Militsiya, is tasked with solving the case.

Renko falls foul of the authorities as he relentlessly exposes the charlatans within the Russian hierarchy, regardless of the power they may have over him.

The story unfolds in a surprising manner, with many plot twists.

Martin Cruz Smith is a wonderful writer, who really catches the mood and the flavour of Mother Russia and who keeps the reader endlessly guessing.  Gorky Park is a must read.

La storia si svolge in modo sorprendente, con molti colpi di scena.

Martin Cruz Smith è uno scrittore meraviglioso, che cattura davvero l’atmosfera e il sapore di Madre Russia e che tiene il lettore a indovinare senza fine. Gorky Park è una lettura obbligata per chi ama il miglior scrittore di narrativa.

Along came a spider

The novel Along Came a Spider written by James Patterson is a great introduction to this prolific and hugely successful writers work.

This book by Patterson introduced us all to Alex Cross and the series which followed. A great thriller which is well plotted and the Alex Cross books have dominated the detective novel lists for years.

Washington, D.C. Alex Cross, the renowned Washington D.C. forensic psychologist and homicide investigator, is tasked with looking in to the violent murder of two black prostitutes and a child in the projects.

Cross is furious when he is removed from the case to investigate a kidnapping of two white children at an expensive private school. He feels that there is a sense that the colour determines which case is the more important. The kidnapper is Gary Soneji, the school maths teacher.

The evil Soneji, buries Maggie Rose Dunne and Michael Goldberg alive, in a coffin made for the task, at a remote farmhouse.

Alex Cross and the FBI make a detailed search of Soneji’s apartment. They find a wealth of information about kidnappings and master criminals. In particular it appears that Soneji has a more than passing obsession with the Lindbergh baby kidnapping of 1932.

Soanji clearly has a warped desire to become infamous.

Cross hooks up with Jezzie Flanagan, the first female supervisor of the Secret Service and the head of the Secret Service investigative team, in a secret liaison which complicates matters.

During the investigation Roger Graham, an FBI agent, is killed by Soneji who disguises himself as a reporter.

A missing little girl named Maggie Rose . . . a family of three brutally murdered in the projects of Washington, D.C. . . . the thrill-killing of a beautiful elementary school teacher . . . a psychopathic serial kidnapper/murderer who is so terrifying that the FBI, the Secret Service, and the police cannot outsmart him – even after he’s been captured.

The police, FBI and the Secret Service are pitted against a true adversary in the guise of the violent psychopath, Soanji.

I don’t want to ruin the plot for you in this cleverly plotted and intricate game of cat and mouse where the stakes are the very highest.

Jack Grimwood is a British writer who was born in Malta. His novel, Moskva, is a taut serial killer thriller and a magnificent piece of fiction.

In the mid-1980s a body of a naked man is found, it’s right hand little finger missing. It’s location, just beside the exterior of the wall of the Kremlin.

Shortly afterwards a fifteen year old girl vanishes. It is particularly concerning because she is the daughter of the British Ambassador.

Recently posted to Moscow, the disgraced military officer, Tom Fox, is entrusted with finding her. He sees a chance to redeem himself. However, the Soviets will not acknowledge the serial killer and cannot identify him and they do not want Fox poking his nose in.

The Soviets are determined to keep a lid on things and to hide the evil that lurks within their system.

Fox is on a race against time to prevent the girl from becoming the next murder victim.

This Cold War thriller is cleverly plotted and beautifully written, evoking another time and another place.

If his fiction novel, Moskva, is anything to go by then Jack Grimwood is a man to watch….and most definitely to read!

Harlan Coben is a highly successfull American author of thriller and mystery novels thrillers with multiple threads woven into them. Many are set in and around New York and New Jersey.

Deal Breaker was written in 1995 and features a former basketball player turned sports agent, ports agent Myron Bolitar. He is about to cash in with Christian Steele, a quarterback, who is one of his premier clients. Bolitar is utterly engaging though hotheaded.

However, things begin to turn sour when the quarter back is contacted bey one of his past girlfriends. Particularly surprising as both the police and he had her as dead.
Myron is faced with the ugly back story of his industry where the façade is everything, especially the gateway to untold riches.

Trying to unravel the truth about a family’s tragedy, a woman’s secret, and a man’s lies, Bolitar is up against the dark side of his business where image and talent make you rich, but the truth can get you killed.

Deal Breaker is a superb novel which is a real page turner from start to finish. Harlan Coben is a superb writer.

Deal Breaker wurde 1995 geschrieben und zeigt einen ehemaligen Basketballspieler, der zum Sportagenten wurde, den Hafenagenten Myron Bolitar. Er ist dabei, mit Christian Steele, einem Quarterback, der einer seiner wichtigsten Kunden ist, Geld zu verdienen. Bolitar ist äußerst engagiert, obwohl er hitzköpfig ist.

Die Dinge beginnen jedoch sauer zu werden, wenn das Viertel zurück von einer seiner früheren Freundinnen kontaktiert wird. Besonders überraschend, da sowohl die Polizei als auch er sie als tot hatten.
Myron sieht sich mit der hässlichen Hintergrundgeschichte seiner Branche konfrontiert, in der die Fassade alles ist, insbesondere das Tor zu unermesslichen Reichtümern.

Bolitar versucht, die Wahrheit über die Tragödie einer Familie, das Geheimnis einer Frau und die Lügen eines Mannes herauszufinden, und steht vor der dunklen Seite seines Geschäfts, wo Image und Talent Sie reich machen, aber die Wahrheit kann Sie umbringen.

Deal Breaker ist ein großartiger Roman, der von Anfang bis Ende ein echter Seitenwender ist. Harlan Coben ist ein hervorragender Autor von Thrillern und Belletristik.
