✔ SEO-gold keywords built into the article for maximum traffic

Welcome to the definitive reading guide for thriller and espionage fans.

SECTION 1: WHY THRILLERS & SPY FICTION ARE MORE POPULAR THAN EVER

1.1 Streaming Has Supercharged the Genre

Thanks to blockbuster series like Slow Horses, Jack Ryan, Reacher, Homeland, The Night Manager, Fauda and Citadel, espionage stories dominate viewing charts.

These adaptations create a feedback loop:
watchers become readers; readers seek more series.

PULL QUOTE:
“Streaming gave thrillers a second golden age. Books are now binge-read the way shows are binge-watched.”

1.2 Geopolitical Chaos Is Fuel for Fiction

The world feels unstable—cyberattacks, surveillance, corrupt power structures, war, AI manipulation.
Readers crave stories from writers that decode the chaos.

Thrillers offer something reality rarely does:
clarity, resolution, and justice.

1.3 The Format Is Addictive

Fast pacing.
Short chapters.
High tension.
Twist after twist after twist.

Thrillers respect modern attention spans—and reward burning curiosity.

1.4 Espionage Has Evolved

Today’s spy thrillers now include:

  • AI surveillance
  • private military contractors
  • elite freelancers
  • big-tech espionage
  • geopolitical cyber-war
  • billionaire power-brokers

The modern espionage novel is the most flexible it has EVER been.

SECTION 2: THE ANATOMY OF THE PERFECT ESPIONAGE THRILLER

2.1 A Hero With a Past

Today’s thrillers feature protagonists who are:

  • brilliant but broken
  • loyal but damaged
  • morally conflicted
  • haunted by loss
  • reluctant to re-enter the fight

From Jason Bourne to Adam Wolf to Mitch Rapp to Gabriel Allon –
depth fuels danger.

2.2 An Intelligent, Terrifying Villain

The best antagonists:

  • believe they are the hero
  • are calm under pressure
  • possess ideological conviction
  • force the protagonist to struggle

The great villain isn’t evil for the sake of it—they’re purposeful.

2.3 Plot Momentum That Never Lets Up

Pacing is everything.

A great thriller:

  • widens scope with every chapter
  • introduces escalating complications
  • changes locations frequently
  • ends chapters on cliffhangers
  • keeps the reader perpetually off-balance

PULL QUOTE:
“A great thriller is a controlled fall—where the writer lets you feel like everything is spinning out of control, even though the structure is perfect.”

2.4 Authentic Detail

Weapons. Surveillance. Tradecraft. Cybersecurity. Forensics. Intelligence analysis.

Thriller readers don’t want hand-waving.
They want accuracy that grounds the suspense in reality.

2.5 Moral Ambiguity

Modern thrillers don’t deal in clear-cut heroes and villains.

Sometimes the government is the villain.
Sometimes the hero becomes what they fear.
Sometimes the mission breaks the operative.

This complexity is the signature of today’s best espionage writing.

The novel begins with Gabriel being called out of retirement to investigate the murder of a cellist in London. The cellist, who was a close friend of Gabriel’s, was killed in a terrorist attack while performing in a concert. Gabriel is tasked with finding out who was behind the attack and bringing them to justice.

As Gabriel investigates the murder, he discovers that the cellist was not the intended target of the attack, but was caught in the crossfire. The real target was a British politician who was also at the concert. Gabriel sets out to find out who was behind the attack and why they wanted to kill the politician.

As Gabriel delves deeper into the case, he finds that the attack is connected to a larger plot that involves a group of radical Islamic extremists who are planning to carry out a major attack in Europe. The group is being led by a mysterious figure known only as “The Panther,” who is a master of disguise and is able to evade detection.

Gabriel works with his team of agents to track down the Panther and his associates. They are able to gather intelligence on the group and their plans, but they struggle to find out where and when the attack will take place.

The best Crime and Thriller writers in Ireland

There are many top fiction thriller and crime writers from Ireland – they are very talented, innovative and have great style.

Here I mention but a few of these new and upcoming authors to entice you.

Top Irish writers include:

Conor Brady is a great writer of historical crime. His work is evocative, enthralling and always well written and engaging. His novel I Hunt In Winter is my personal favorite.

His historical research is faultless and the detail is captivating. As Editor of the Irish Times he has a fine pedigree and you can expect only the best.

The respected Irish Times speaks very highly of Olivia Kieran. Read this writers books and you will see why. I feel that this writer will have a long and successful career as her fan base must surely expand rapidly.

Don’t miss out on her book, Too Close to Breathe

The author Gene Kerrigan writes beautiful prose set in a contemporary Ireland awash with thieves, slippery individuals and a society’s seedy underbelly laid bare. He is the author of The Rage.

Benjamin Black is a Booker Prize winner and a fine writer and his book Wolf on a String is my favourite.

The fiction from writer Ken Bruen is gritty and raw and very readable. It has the feel of classic American crime novels of yesteryear brought into the modern world.

Declan Burke is a prolific writer of crime thrillers. His fiction is well written with great plot and with a wry sense of humour on occasion. The Lost and the Blind is my personal favourite.

The John Connolly books of Charlie Parker are set in the US in Maine. Connolly is a very interesting wiriter who goes from strength t strength and I feel we will hear much more from him in the future.

He has a cocktail of horror and crime which is refreshing to read.

My favourite book from this Dublin born author is, The Woman in the Woods.

The author Sinéad Crowley has rapidly made a name for herself in the crime writing world, and rightly so! A great writer who certainly knows her craft. Her psychological crime thrillers are full of suspense and are well worth the read. My recommended read is Can Anybody Help Me?

Luca D’Andrea ha scritto i thriller psicologici bestseller, The Mountain and Sanctuary.

Political conspiracies

See Glass by Ido Graf

Sea Glass - My best fiction books 2020

The book See Glass by Ido Graf, is a fast-paced, action, political thriller which has been described as having a style like Tom Clancy.  I agree with that but I would also say, Frederick Forsyth as both authors researched their novels in great detail,  as does Graf. They all intertwine fact with fiction giving novels of profound insight and realism.

Sea Glass is a contemporary thriller set in various exotic locations such as North America, Europe and the Middle East.

The story begins in a small Andalusian fishing village when a redundant reporter meets a former Foreign Legionnaire by chance. The story he is told appears to be fictitious, but as the journalist begins to dig deeper  …the boundaries between fact and fiction begin to blur and the danger increases.

A top story for men and women that encompasses secrets, spies, hidden Nazi gold and politicians across the northern hemisphere.

The new book See Glass by thriller, adventure, espionage story writer Ido Graf has all the twists of a Nelson DeMille bestseller novel. DeMille’s Plum Island is one of my best fiction books of all time. See Glass is one of my picks for best fiction books of 2020.

Another great fiction book writer I have read recently is Ben MacIntyre. His book The Spy and the Traitor is a riveting book and another of my top fiction books to read. It’s the sort of book that would make a great contemporary film or TV series.

Many new streaming services have appeared in recent years. Film production companies  such as Metro Goldwyn Mayer and Paramount Pictures have been joined by others such as HBO, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Studios, Sky TV, Crackle and Disney+.

See Glass by Ido Graf is available now either as a paperback , large print book or as a Kindle eBook on Amazon. It is also available on Amazon or Audible as an audiobook.

The book tells of the  subversion of the US democracy by a President in league with right-wing, neo-Nazi groups, the Russian President and other groups. A political thriller that will really make you think!
